Building Practical Technology | 1980–1989

Mike Sr. and Elouise Kuncaitis where it all started

The company was founded in 1980 by Mike Kuncaitis, Sr. as Data Consultants Inc. From the beginning, the company took a business-first approach to technology  -  focusing on understanding the problem before recommending a solution and applying technology only where it delivered real operational value.

South Grand Rapids Location

In 1985, the company expanded when Elouise Kuncaitis founded Standard Computer Systems Inc., establishing one of the region’s few women‑owned technology companies during that period. This marked the first major expansion of the organization and set the foundation for long‑term ownership and steady growth.

Leadership Takes Shape | 1987–1999

Mike Jr. & Mike Sr. – 1st and 2nd Generation working together

Beginning in 1987, second-generation leadership joined the organization, strengthening technical, operational, and strategic direction throughout the late 1980s and 1990s.

In the late 1980s and 1990s, as manufacturers adopted ERP/MRP platforms built for the plant floor, K Group expanded nationally through organic growth and acquisition. The team helped manufacturing brands connect purchasing, inventory, scheduling, and fulfillment into one operating system.

They supported the era’s core stacks - dBase, Novell, Microsoft, and Unix - powering manufacturing ERP environments, keeping BOMs, work orders, inventory, and production reporting running reliably. Low‑voltage wiring services extended that integration from the office network to the shop floor.

Formalizing Services & Expanding Scope | 2000–2009

In the early 2000s, K Group strengthened its technical foundation through a targeted acquisition, bringing in additional talent to support growing client needs. During this time, the team also designed, developed, and patented an accounting software system tailored to manufacturers, reinforcing its position as a trusted partner within West Michigan’s manufacturing market.

As demand increased, K Group shifted focus to structure, scalability, and consistency. The organization became an early Microsoft Certified Partner, aligned teams under a unified operating model, and expanded key vendor relationships to support a more disciplined, repeatable approach to service delivery.

This period also marked a significant expansion of capabilities. K-Data Systems was launched to extend services into data centers, hosting, and web development, while office automation services were introduced to support the growing intersection of business operations and technology platforms.

In 2008, K Group acquired Riverview Service, a Mendon, MI–based company operating across multiple locations. This acquisition expanded K Group’s geographic reach and strengthened its ability to serve a broader customer base. It also accelerated the introduction of physical security services, meeting rising demand for managed facility systems and advancing the company’s integrated systems capabilities.

From Reactive to Managed Services | 2010–2014

3rd Generation joining the ranks with Riverview

Entering the new decade, K Group shifted from reactive break-fix support to a proactive managed services model. This change created more consistent outcomes for clients and set the foundation for long-term scale. The company invested in facilities, branding, and data center infrastructure to support this next phase of growth.

In 2010, K Group also brought a clear vision to market around supporting nonprofit organizations, aligning services to better meet the unique operational and budget needs of that sector.

At the same time, a recurring challenge in the field led to the formation of the Office Automation Group. K Group was often caught between vendors and client needs when issues arose across office equipment and workflows. Rather than defer, the company built internal expertise to take ownership. This allowed K Group to support the full document environment, reduce vendor friction, and deliver faster resolution for clients.

Managed Services were formally launched in 2011, redefining how clients received ongoing support, planning, and system oversight.

This period also marked the introduction of third-generation leadership, reinforcing continuity while supporting continued service evolution.

Operational Maturity and Alignment | 2015–2019

2nd Generation proudly assumes ownership

With a broad service portfolio established, K Group turned its focus to operational discipline and leadership development. The organization migrated to a modern PSA platform, centralized administrative functions, and invested in improved data, reporting, and process maturity.

In 2018, ownership formally transitioned to second-generation leadership. New service models followed - including monthly consumption-based services, the launch of a Network Operations Center, and a restructured Managed Services delivery approach built around performance and accountability.  Pictured here (left to right): Michael Kuncaitis, Jr., Ben Kuncaitis Sr., Chris Kuncaitis.
